What is a beachlabyrinth?

To me, a beachlabyrinth is a labyrinth where the path is delimited on both sides by a sand dike. The sand needed for building the dike is supplied through excavating the path.

If the beachlabyrinth is made at a spot lower than the floodmark, and a couple of hours before high tide, the rising tide will enter the labyrinth, a beautiful sight and wonderous feeling. Depending on labyrinthpattern, size of the dikes, wind, waves and tide, the labyrinth will disappear in the waves. Sometimes a mark is still there after the water has receded, often nothing is left.

A beachlabyrinth is meant for digging together. It is strenuous work, but usually within one and a half hour achieved.
Young and elder people, families, friends and individuals join in, everyone in his/her own way.
The only thing needed is a shovel and shoes to protect your feet.
After the digging, we walk the labyrinth together, or everyone for him/herself. You can walk it as long as you please. Gradually the sea joins in. Some like to keep dry feet, others keep walking as long as there is something visible or walkable.

In what and how I descibe the 'technical' side.

The Story is an impression of, and a view on the attraction and symbolism of the labyrinth and the sea. I wrote it as an entry to the annual writing contest of The Labyrinth Society in 2004 and won a second place.
